The Legacy of the Modern Olympic Games
1.1. Recommend the Wisdom of Exercise by Professor Vassilis Klissouras, the Father of Modern Exercise Physiology
“In our day and age, the world is suffering from the stubborn disease of “insufficient physical activity” and “insufficient exercise”. Exercise physiology unlocks the wisdom of the human body’s movement and adaptation of muscle activity, allowing professionals in sports medicine and exercise science to gain a deep understanding of the important physiological processes of health, fitness and performance” (Vassilis Klissouras, 2024)
Recommend the Wisdom of Exercise and Fitness by Professor Vassilis Klissouras, the Father of Modern Exercise Physiology – Translated into Chinese by Professor Huang Ming YANG, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

As a student and close friend of Professor Vassilis Klissouras, I am very honored to have the opportunity to translate his recently written masterpiece, Color Atlas of Ergophysiology: The Wisdom of the Moving Body, into Chinese, and solemnly introduce this outstanding textbook on exercise and health to readers, “Color Atlas of Ergophysiology: The Wisdom of Exercise and Fitness”.
Dr.Zhu am very honored that Professor Vassilis originally granted me the copyright to translate this book. After consideration, Dr. Zhu has been working in the fields of sports psychiatry and sports psychology for many years. She was worried that she could not translate genetics and exercise physiology better, so he did not dare to accept it easily. Thanks to Prof. Huanming, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences who is engaged in genetics.
“Professor Klissouras, is one of the founders of Olympic sports science. At the Olympic Science Symposium held in 2019 at the original Olympic site, where the Olympic flame is taken every year, I witnessed the heartfelt respect expressed to him by all participants from all over the world.”(H.M., Yang, 2024)
He has taught or trained generations of students and trainees all over the world. “His first English textbook, Human Physiology, was published in 1973. In the 50 years since then, the book has been favored by teachers and students of sports colleges and people from all walks of life who love sports around the world. It has been popular until now and has been reprinted 11 times in a row, which is rare in the history of modern Western education. This shows his status in the Olympic sports science community and his influence and reputation in the global sports and biology community” (Yang Huanming, 2024).
1.2. Professor Klissouras’ philosophical insights: After 100 years of Olympics, our mind and body come finally together”
Professor Vassilis Klissouras offers a unique perspective on the interplay between mind and body, especially in the context of modern Olympic competition. His philosophy emphasizes that achieving excellent athletic performance is not just about physical effort, but rather a combination of mental fortitude and physical fitness. This philosophy reflects the intrinsic relationship between cognitive processes and athletic performance, suggesting that mental toughness is as important as rigorous physical training. In elite sports, mental strength becomes a key factor influencing the outcome of competitions.
Prof. Vassilis Klissouras encourage Dr.Zhu: “After 100 years of Olympics, our mind and body come finally together”! (Personal communication, Athens, 2014, Prague, 2017).
